We are now in Florida, all be it at the top, but Florida, land of the live oak trees covered in moss, palm trees, and sunshine. We have been here before and like it. Today we drove 234 miles, it was a good day driving, the four hours seemed to just go by, still traffic, but the roads by far were very good. Here for one night, it’s 84 here and now sunny. We are all doing good, and not much else for now. Picture below is of our spot
We are now near Macon Georgia, at High Falls State Park, we have been here before. We left earlier this morning than we usually do, mostly because we were awake early, it rained all night and hard at times, remints of Delta. However when we got up it stopped and we were able to hitch up and leave. The site we had has a tight bend when you leave and downhill, boy did the 5er moan as i made the turn. It rained on and off all day as we made our way down here. Plus traffic again was bad ,and we hit a traffic jam, right before Atlanta, lasted about an hour ,stop and go. I was frustrated today, people just think they can dart in front of you or tail gate behind. We drove 234 miles today, the most of the trip so far. Tonight i think i will just sit in the recliner and rest, no tv music, nothing. Picture of our spot here below.
Today was not the wash out we thought it would be. So we did a few things and found out more about the park. So my first history lesson in a very long time.
Yesterday when we went to Walmart to shop a little, I spotted a Waffle House, yep this morning we went there for breakfast. It was so so service, but the food is always good, could of been a little hotter, Coffee is great. Now i am happy.
After that we went into the park and visited another family cemetery. Up until 1939 there were about 250 families living in the park boundries. Six family cemeteries are here. My post last year on the park had a bit on one of them. This one was the Lee family
RUINS OF THE FAMILY HOME
After that we went back to the Rv and started to clean it a little inside, has been a while, about noon, we decided to take a hike on the nature trail, about 1.5 miles, after a while i told Melissa i think we are on the wrong trail, sure enough we were on the Fairforest creek trail, 3.5 miles long. OOPS , then it started to rain, harder and harder, we backtracked a little to a side trail that led along the road, for the last mile or so. In total we hiked 4 miles, and got pretty wet.
After we got back i went and took a nice hot shower, AAAH it waas nice. Melissa of course wore a rain jacket, not me ????.
Now for some history on the park which was first named Camp Croft. Built on 9000 acres back in 1939, it was a army training camp. In all 250,000 men were trained here during the war. 16,000 came in at a time and They trained in everything you could think of, in there 16 weeks of training. Then shipped off to the war, mostly Europe or the pacific. After the war, 7000 acres were sold to the state to make the park, and 2000 remain as camp Croft recreation area. All over the place and on all the trails you see signs, not beware of bears, but beware of live explosives. As a training site everything from hand grenades, bazooka rounds, anti tank rounds, artillery rounds were used here, lots did not go off. They are all over and they tell you that. Be neat to find a grenade!!!!. WHY didn’t we notice this last time we were here, HUH
So there you have it, tomorrow we leave(most likely in the rain) for Georgia
Today we traveled 180 miles to Croft State park here in Spartanburg SC. The trip was filled with heavy traffic(everybody and there brother were out driving) and construction along the way, the Rv took a little beating, it was not a fun drive. I am a little tired and worn down. We stay here till Sunday when we leave for Georgia. The rain also has caught up with us, most likely Saturday and Sunday it will be raining. That’s, I guess Ok, we are not sightseeing here. Picture below is of our site here.
We are at Mayberry campground, here in Mt Airy NC. We have been here before, no real frills here, but a good one night stop over. We drove 188 miles from Staunton Va to here today, up and down the hills of Virginia, into North Carolina by way of Fancy gap a 40 mph uphill climb followed by a 7 mile, 8% grade downhill, hitting 70 mph . Traffic was horrible, nothing but semis on the road. Plus along the way Wide load vehicles passed me and when i looked back it was a huge mining truck bed almost taking up both lanes, he wasn’t really gonna stop for me, so i went into the shoulder lane and let him pass, that was exciting NOT. It was also down right hot here 84, i think. A little cooler weather ahead for us the next several days. Other than that we are doing well. Pic below is of our spot here.
We are now at Walnut Hills Campground in Virginia. we have been here before, it is a nice place, more people here than we usually see, there are a lot of big rigs here tonight, all heading to Florida i guess. Drove 191 miles from Gettysburg to here, truck traffic was heavy and it was windy, my arms are tired. Staying here just one night and tomorrow head to North Carolina. It is warming up nicely as we head south, i like that. Pic below is of our pull through spot.
As Dave said, We’re on the road again! Time for new adventures!
We’re leaving Gettysburg today and won’t be back for a few years. As those of you who know Dave two years will be a long time for him. We stayed at
We’ve stayed here before it’s a nice place. One of the nicest things was that it didn’t rain and the weather was great for our walks around the battlefield and town.
On Monday the 5th we took a ride to Schellsburg PA., to visit a friend of mine Amy, whom I worked with awhile back at Northrup Grumman. She moved to PA and is now living in a house she inherited from her Father. It’s a really nice place on a long curvy road. You gotta love roads like that.
The road to a friend’s house is never long. Danish proverb
Me, Maggie in the middle and last but not least Amy!Dave trying to get Amy’s parrot, Burt to say a new word. I won’t tell you what it was!
Thanks for everything Amy, it was great seeing you again! ! !
On the 6th we walked around the Gettysburg Battlefield.
We walked to my dad’s favorite place, Little Round Top, and stood where he used to stand. He stood just like General Warren and looked across the valley to Devil’s Den. I wish I knew wat he was thinking.
We continued to walk to Dave’s favorite places and then into town and had a pizza at Tommy’s, it was delicious as always! Nice time had by all!
We are now in Gettysburg Pa at the Drummer Boy Campground. We have been here before. Staying here till Wednesday morning when we will have about four one night hops ahead of us to get to Georgia or so. Tomorrow we will visit a Friend of Melissa from her work long ago, and Tuesday will visit the town and battlefield for the day.
Yesterday (Saturday )we left our home base in Newfane and drove 240 miles to Williamsport Pa, where we stayed at a Walmart. One thing i forgot to think of when we decided to stay here was that it would be colder. It was 39 last night, no heat, with no hook ups. It was not as bad as we thought it would be. Actually slept some. We got there about five or so, and had dinner and snacks in the truck( it was warmer), then about 9:30 or so went in the rv and went to bed. Today (Sunday) got up had egg sandwhich from the resturant nearby and left about 10 and got here a little after one, drove 148 miles. Already 10 degrees warmer here. That’s about it for now, pics below of Walmart site and campground site.
We have less than a week to go before we leave here for Florida. Time has just flown by. It was a good summer here, somewhat hot, not a lot of rain, but time to go. Melissa is going to make a post about our summer here hopefully in the next week.
We leave here this Saturday and it will take us about 10 days to get to Key Largo. There we will be work camping at John Pennakamp state park, until January 1st 2021. Then we will head to Key Biscayne near Miami to work camp at Billy Baggs state park. We will be there until March 31st. Then we head west and arrive in Arizona sometime in early May.
Thats about it for now, will most likely make posts about our stops dopwn to Florida, but most will be one night stays.
Had some problems with the blog lately. Apparently it is not free anymore, and they added a few features that would not let us post. In upgrading we are now a .com site and followers may have to resave our site. Pain in my butt but hopefully all is back to normal, if not we start over again.
